After North, I attended the University of Minnesota, where I became involved in doing research in microbiology. Participating in research became my life-long passion, and I am truly lucky here; I was able to bear witness (and perhaps participate to a minor extent) in the exciting discoveries that were and still are occurring in understanding life, especially on a cellular and molecular level. After graduating, I studied in California for a few years, and have been teaching and doing research at West Virginia University in the beautiful city of Morgantown since 1974. While at the U of M, I married Regina Raucher from St. Paul (many of you may have known her). We were together for 35 wonderful years, and we had one very terrific daughter who now lives in California. Regina passed away in 2004. She was a well respected legal aid and plaintiff attorney for many years, and then became administrative law judge for the State of West Virginia. Last September I married again to another wonderful woman, Anne Selinger. We live in Morgantown, and I still teach and do research. All in all, I have been truly fortunate in having the gift of connecting with two wonderful women, having a very dear and special daughter, having great family and friends (some friends going back all the way to Willard), having a very exciting and rewarding job. …and, perhaps equally important, still playing softball! But this little sketch doesn’t touch on the dreams, failures, frustrations, and meeting life challenges—as I grew to learn, and I am sure you know, we all have our own, distinctive, complex, and interesting life story.
