Comment: At North, some of you might remember that I played basketball. I set a City scoring record of almost 29 points per game. The record lasted for about 14 years. I was also Snow King, which was the counterpart to Andrea's Homecoming Queen. Each of us was chosen for brightest smile. After graduating North, I attended the U. of M. I played basketball for 4 years. I was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. I received a degree in business, which was worthless. As the war in Vietnam was raging, staying in school was the only choice. Thus, law school at the U. of M. was my choice for the next 3 years. After graduating, I decided to move to L.A. to practice. I have been here ever since and still work as a lawyer. I guess I will continue until my brain turns into sauerkraut. I have been married to my wife Linda for the past 38 years and we have a son Richard, who is married and a daughter, Elise, who is not. Linda and I are looking forward to seeing my classmates in August 2011!! |

After a 28-year career as a reporter and editor with the Star Tribune, I took early retirement four years ago. Although I loved my job, I have been having just as much fun traveling, spending time with kids and 5 grandkids and volunteering with MinnPost, a four-year-old online newspaper, since I left. |

I'm looking forward to attending my FIRST reunion. Can it really be 50 years? The website is wonderful! I am so grateful for all the effort that has gone into making this all happen. Last March I saw the website for the first time and was so saddened to see the list of deceased classmates. I feel fortunate to have attended North High School (as did my sister and both parents). In addition to a fine education, and many wonderful activities, I was exposed to a remarkably diverse population of teens. I feel blessed to have grown up when and where I did. Life seems so much more complicated now. After High School, I attended the University of Minnesota. Thanks to excellent advising, I graduated in 1964 with majors in Mathematics and Psychology. I then attended the University of California, San Diego for five years, living a half block from the ocean in La Jolla for five glorious years. UCSD was just developing then and went from 500 to 8000 students during my years there - doubling in size every year. I completed my PhD in 1969. My last year in graduate school I participated in Project SEED (Special Elementary Education for the Disadvantaged). Each day, I lead four classes of fifth graders in a "discovery" of Abstract Mathematics. The goal was to give these inner city students (many of whom were flunking arithmetic) an opportunity to achieve success at a "high status" subject. Toward the end of the year, the Parent Advisory Board had to decide if they should fund the project another year. We were competing against providing a free lunch to everyone in the school! I invited my students back for an evening demonstration to show the Board how they "discovered" Mathematical theory. Some of the curious University UCSD Math Professors attended as well. During that half hour session, the students were so marvelous, discovering the concept of a 0 exponent and eventually talking over the heads of the Parent Board with the University Professors. A TV news camera was there as well. The project got funded and I was hooked on teaching Abstract Mathematics! In retrospect, I realize that as the major formative experience in my career. After completing my PhD in 1969, I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder for four years. I got to teach graduate level pure math (which I had thought was my goal) and also volunteered some in an elementary school and did some consulting with Education Development Center of Boston. In 1973, I moved to Kansas City to join the faculty at Rockhurst University, a small Jesuit school that valued quality teaching. As part of a small department, offering Computer Science courses, I got involved in writing a computer programming text book. I think it turned out to be the number five seller in a field of over 200 books - but alas the top two books had over 98% of the market. Nevertheless, it was an interesting and challenging experience. In the last several years at Rockhurst I taught the "college level" math course that was taken by all the students who disliked math and had tried to avoid it. My goal was to get a few "converts" each year - it reminded me of that year with the SEED project which I had enjoyed so much. Rosa and I have five wonderful children and seven grandchildren - three born in the past four months. The oldest son lives in Israel with a one week old baby I have yet to see. The others are in NY, NJ, PA and OH. Since retiring in 2007, I go to a senior center (where I'm the youngest) for exercise and socializing. I volunteer at an elementary school math club and visit some calculus classes for Rockhurst. I refuse to get involved in anything that prevents my frequent travels to visit the kids and my sister for weeks at a time. I've enjoyed reading through all the bios on the website and apologize for boring you with mine. I feel blessed in so many ways - including my roots in North Minneapolis. |

While not a real student at NHS, I did finally get a couple of doctorates while doing research in Vienna and Harvard respectively. I teach at the Carlson School of Management strategic management, of course, and was fortunate to teach and research at USACGSC at Ft Leavenworth and the JFK School at Ft Bragg and see some of the Army generals in the making like Petraeus as young majors long ago. Got married to a Minneapolis girl Beverly Atkin who graduated Southwest, have two grown boys going to Iowa Daniel (a marketing major), and Matt who is a Senior at Cooper High in their IB Program. Hope all of you are staying well, healthy and enjoying your lives over the last 50 years and more to come. Best, Joe |
