Karen B. Holtmeier, M.P.H., is a registered dietitian and a licensed nutritionist.  She is director of medical nutrition therapy and co-founder and owner of Medical Weight Management Centers as well as a nationally recognized leader in obesity and weight management treatment.

Medical Weight Management Centers, established in 1997, is a Minneapolis/St. Paul medical clinic that specializes in personal weight management.  There are three clinic locations — Edina, Woodbury and St. Paul, Minn.

Ms. Holtmeier earned a master’s degree in public health nutrition and a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from the University of Minnesota. 

She has more than 25 years of experience in the areas of weight reduction, diabetes treatment, health promotion, cholesterol education, sports nutrition and eating disorders. 

Previously, she was director of nutrition and consumer information for the Minnesota Beef Council, manager of nutrition education at Park Nicollet Medical Center, corporate dietitian and health consultant for an employee wellness program at Control Data Corporation, and clinical dietitian at The Endocrinology Clinic of Minneapolis.  She also has provided nutrition counseling to health club clients for 15 years.

Ms. Holtmeier is a member and director of continuing education for office assistants of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, a member of the American, Minnesota and Twin Cities District Dietetic Associations, as well as other professional and community organizations.

In addition to national presentations to lay and professional audiences, Ms. Holtmeier has conducted radio, television and newspaper interviews about nutrition, fast food and weight loss.  Her advice has been featured in Good Housekeeping, First for Women, Mpls/St.Paul, and Minnesota Health Care News.   She also has co-authored articles and research studies on weight reduction in such publications as Minnesota Medicine, The American Journal of Bariatric Medicine, and the Family Practice Research Journal. 

In 2007, Ms. Holtmeier was the recipient of the first Excellence in Weight Management Practice Award from the Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The award recognizes exceptional performance and contributions to the advancement of weight management practice.

Ms. Holtmeier has run ten marathons and enjoys walking, bicycling, aerobics, swimming and Pilates as a part of her own weight maintenance program.
